Serve, Support, Strengthen

  • Born and raised in Surrey; moved to Langley in the 1980’s
  • Devoted mother of a daughter (son-in-law) and son (daughter-in-law), and a joyful grandmother to three grandchildren
  • Sister to a wonderful brother (sister-in-law)
  • Passionately committed to community service

I have been a community builder my entire adult life. My core beliefs center around serving, supporting, and strengthening my community.

I have been honoured to be recognized for my volunteerism with several accolades, including the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medallion, The Township of Langley Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award, and the Hilda Reddick Aldergrove Community Volunteer Award.

Professionally, I have a solid foundation in accounting. During the mid-90s I established a successful office supply store in Aldergrove, and my business quickly evolved into a local hub that fostered connections with various organizations and associations. I then went on to be the bookkeeper for many of these organizations and several local businesses, including nearly a decade with Langley’s JD Farms Specialty Turkey.

“I have been involved in our community for 25+ years. I know the issues and concerns, the wonderful people, and have the connections, work ethic, and leadership experience to get things done for this riding.”

Karen Long
Independent Candidate for MLA, Langley-Abbotsford

Why Am I Running in Langley-Abbotsford?

As a mother and a grandmother, I’m committed to delivering real results for British Columbians and building a brighter future for this generation, and my grandchildren’s generation.

  • I want BC to be an affordable place to live, so that our children and grandchildren can remain in our province and not have to look for opportunities elsewhere.
  • I want all British Columbians to have good jobs that put food on the table and allow for a home that they can afford.
  • I want to support our farmers and agricultural sector, and all businesses and industries, to achieve affordability, food security and sustain a healthy way of life for all British Columbians.
  • I want British Columbians, especially our seniors, to have better access to health care.
  • I want all British Columbians to have pride in their community and in their province.

Frequently Asked Questions

Won’t an independent candidate split the vote in Langley-Abbotsford?

I am running to win. I was the first candidate to announce in Langley-Abbotsford. I am the only candidate with decades of experience as a community leader in this riding, making me the best person for the job. Arguably it will be the BC Conservative candidate who splits the vote and allows the BC NDP to win.

BC rarely elects Independent candidates as MLAs. How much influence would you have in Victoria as an Independent MLA?

While it’s true that BC has historically not seated many Independent MLAs, the 2024 election promises to be history-making.

There are a lot of voters right across our province who feel that on many issues the BC NDP is too far left, and the BC Conservatives are too far right, and that our politics are becoming too polarized.

It’s likely that several Independent MLAs will be elected on October 19, and those MLAs may well hold the balance of power between the BC NDP and the BC Conservatives. I want Langley-Abbotsford to have a seat at that table.

Regardless of who forms government, or what that government looks like, I have always fought for what’s right in our community, and as an Independent MLA I will be fully free to petition for Langley-Abbotsford’s best interests.

As an Independent MLA what resources will you have to be able to do anything for this riding?

Many may not realize that Independent MLAs have access to nearly all the same resources as party-affiliated members:

  • funding for constituency offices
  • communication budgets
  • staff
  • opportunities to introduce private members’ bills

All MLAs get rotations during question periods to ask the hard questions of Government (and in the case of Independents, ask questions of the Opposition too!).

If just two Independents are elected this election, we could form a recognized group in the Legislature, gaining additional resources to keep the Government in check and focused on the issues most important to British Columbians.

Maybe it’s time to do politics differently.
