A Centre-Right, Free-Enterprise, Fiscally Conservative View – True Common Sense

I was proud to have been selected as the BC United candidate to represent centre-right, free-enterprise, fiscally conservative values in the upcoming election.

With Kevin Falcon’s decision on August 28 to suspend the BC United (formerly BC Liberals) campaign in a backroom deal with the BC Conservatives, voters in Langley-Abbotsford were stripped of that centre-right choice.

The BC NDP’s time in government has provided us with slow, ineffective solutions, while the BC Conservatives push outdated and extreme policies that don’t address 21st century challenges.

This is a historic time in BC politics, with upwards of 17 candidates running as center-right Independents. Voters who feel that the BC NDP is too far left and the BC Conservatives are too far right have a real choice.

Below are some of the key issues I intend to focus on in Langley-Abbotsford. If you have an issue that you care deeply about and want to let me know, see Contact.

As an Independent candidate, I am here for YOU and your concerns.

Common-Sense Solutions for Our Community

“Regardless of the issue facing the constituents of Langley-Abbotsford, I will work to consult widely and fight for a common-sense solution for our community, one that won’t have to toe party lines or rigid ideology. That’s the power of independence.”

Karen Long, Independent Candidate for MLA, Langley-Abbotsford

Seniors’ Issues

  • Ensure our governments plan for our greying population so that they can age with dignity & grace
  • Advocate for the establishment of a ministerial-level position for seniors’ issues

Health Care

  • Put the interests of patients ahead of bureaucrats
  • Push for an increase in training new doctors & health care workers
  • Provide increased treatment options & programs for people with addictions & mental health concerns

Affordability

  • Keep taxes low & government small
  • Fight for policies that address affordable rental stock & pathways to home ownership, & better supports for the unhoused

Public Safety & Crime

  • Put a focus on local policing to address the current epidemic of addressing crime & lawlessness
  • Advocate for the hiring of more police officers & better support for them to do their jobs
  • Ensure we meet the health & welfare needs of our firefighters, paramedics, & other first responders

Agricultural / Farming & Food Security Concerns

  • Demand transparent decision-making & timely public land decisions
  • Fight for agricultural water resources
  • Build up our agricultural sector to ensure the security of our food systems
  • Ensure the continued viability and sustainability of our agricultural lands

My thinking on key issues.

Over the course of the campaign I’ve attended several All Candidates Meetings and completed several questionnaires organized by different interest and media groups. For each of these my process has been to do a ‘deep dive’ on the issues; I want to really understand the concerns and be able to offer common-sense thinking and solutions.

I respect the voters in this riding enough to 1) have shown up to these meetings and completed the surveys, and be asked the hard questions and 2) share my positions as an Independent on the key issues facing our community and province.

See my speaking notes / survey submissions to learn more about my thinking on seniors’ issues, health care, affordability, public safety & crime, agricultural / farming & food security concerns, arts & culture and more.
